Norah Jeruto clocks 9:01.54 in first heat 3000m Steeplechase

Norah Jeruto clocks 9:01.54 in first heat 3000m Steeplechase – Kazakhstan’s Norah Jeruto makes a statement in the first heat of the women’s 3000m steeplechase. Her 9:01.54 is the second-quickest ever time at the World Championships, including finals. The previous quickest ever heat was 9:17.67.

Ethiopia’s Werkwuha Getachew (9:11.25) gets the second automatic qualifying place and Tunisia’s Marwa Bouzayani takes more than 11 seconds off her PB with 9:12.14 for third, to join them in the final. USA’s Emma Coburn finishes fourth and also gets a place in the final as a non-automatic qualifier.

Alice Finot wins the second heat in a national record of 9:14.34 ahead of Ethiopia’s Mekides Abebe (9:14.83) and Albania’s Luiza Gega (9:14.91). USA’s Courtney Wayment and Uganda’s Olympic champion Peruth Chemutai are among the non-automatic qualifiers for the final from that heat.

Kenya’s Celliphine Chepteek Chespol is the third heat winner in 9:16.78 from Marusa Mismas-Zrimsek (9:17.14) and Bahrain’s Winfred Mutile Yavi (9:17.32). Olympic silver medallist Courtney Frerichs will join her two US colleagues in the final after finishing fourth.
