William Amponsah Wins Men’s Asante Akyem Marathon 2021

William Amponsah beats the defending champion Ishmael Arthur to win the fourth edition of the men’s Asante Akyem Marathon 2021 in 1:12.39 seconds. William took an early lead of all the athletes and it became a one-man’s race. The initial distance was 24 km but it was later changed to 21 km. The men’s started the race from Juasohenekrom – Agogo Market Centre in the morning. About 150 athletes registered for the mega event of which 85% were men and 20% were women. The race was very parked with most of the experienced athletes in the country. There were early showers of rain in the morning at Asante Akyem North Municipality. Today’s weather was very conducive for distance running.

William broke away from the leading ground at the 5 km mark but Ismael Arthur and Koogo Atia followed him until at the 8km mark. William who has a lot of experience on the road quickly increased his pace again and Ishmael and Koogo didn’t follow him again. The gap began to grow bigger and bigger and the race became one man’s race until the finish line. Although the route was very hilly and most of the athletes slowed down but the community fans cheered them up and it was a very harmonious environment.

William Amponsah crossed the finish line in 1:12.39 seconds to win the gold medal, which is a new course record time. While the silver medal was won by his running teammate Ishmael Arthur finished second in 1:14.42 seconds and Koogo Atia also placed third to take home the bronze medal in 1:15.22 seconds. Koogo Atia won the maiden edition of the Ashiyie Marathon.

All the times are official and it’s certified by Ghana Athletics Association (GAA). Some dignitaries present were the Director-General of the National Youth Authority, Prof. Peter Twumasi, Former Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, President of the Ghana Athletics Association, Ababu Afelibiek, Hon. Kwadwo Baa Agyemang, CEO of National Sports Authority, Hon. Pious Enam Hadzie, CEO of GAA, Mr. Bawa Fuseini, Former Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Ghana Legend, Yussif Chibsah.

The event was very successful and we hope for a more advanced version in 2022.
