Why Athletics Is Underrated In Ghana?
Athletics in Ghana has been one of the underrated sports disciplines in the country for decades. There are a lot of disciplines under athletics but the country itself doesn’t value these sport disciplines.
The media only talk about it when they see that one is performing. Unfortunately the media talk more about those athletes who had able to travel and compete at the international level.
When the athlete wins, every single media in the country begin to write and publish news about him or her. Why Athletics is underrated in Ghana?
Unfortunately few of the Ghanaian Athletes get the opportunity to travel outside preferably United States of America to continue their studies either in the college or university. Only the best gets this type of scholarship to study abroad through their athletics background. Nothing is gotten on a silver plater most of the athletes go through a lot before securing visa and some of them also refused.
About 90% of the Ghana National Team Athletes are based in the United States of America because upon completion of their school they feel it better to stay and work there rather than coming back to Ghana.
Most of these athletes totally loose interest in athletics when they complete school because after completion it’s very difficult for an athlete to get a race to compete. But while in school the school authorities do everything for the athletes when it comes to the competitions processes.
Ghana can boast itself as one the best sprinters runners in Africa and the best precisely in West Africa. The middle and distance runners is also making waves.
The most unfortunate aspect is that as of now the Ghana Athletics Association does not have a kit or shoe sponsorship deal for the National Team.
Most of the athletes wear their own kit when they are going for national duties.
Our Athletes had been dominant in the Olympic Games, World Championships, All African Games, CAA Region II Championships and other events that are held in the country.
- Joseph, Malik, Manu and Abayie Shine At NCAA East Track and Field Prelims
- Competitions to be held in Ghana From June to August
Currently we have about four track and field athletes who had already qualified for the upcoming Tokyo Olympic Games in the 100m, 200m, 4x100m and the Triple Jump.
The Ghana National Team won bronze medal at the just ended World Athletics Relays Championships in Silesia, Poland, unfortunately they were disqualified due to one of the technical rules in the Baton change.
But these athletes showed a world class performance and it shows that when things are being put in the right place this team can win a medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
Most of the athletes are making Ghana proud in the world stage but the Athletics in Ghana is still underrated.
