University of Ghana Athletes handed national call ups

University of Ghana Athletes handed national call ups – The University of Ghana’s 4×100 Relay Team and promising 100m runner, Saminu Abdul Rasheed have been selected for the Annual International Invitational Relay event at Benin City, Nigeria from 24th to 25th June, 2022 and the 2022 Commonwealth Games to be held at Birmingham, England from 28th July to 8th August, 2022 respectively.

The UG Relay Team made up of Isaac Botsio (Level 200, BA Sports and Physical Culture Studies), Saminu Abdul-Rasheed (Level 200, Diploma in Public Administration) James Dadzie (Level 200, BA Sports and Physical Culture Studies) and Solomon Kweku Hammond (Level 200, Diploma in Public Administration) were selected based on their excellent showing at the just ended 10th Federation of African Universities Sports (FASU) Games held in Nairobi, Kenya from 6th to 10th June, 2022.

These student athletes who are beneficiaries of the University of Ghana Policy on the Admission of Athlete Students (UG-PAAS) and the University of Ghana Sport Fund (UG-SF) won gold in 4x100m with a time of 39.38 seconds.

The International Invitational Relay which is being organised by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) will also have UG’s Daniel Yaw Mantey Otibo (Level 300, BA Sports and Physical Culture Studies) represent Ghana in the 4x400m and 4x400m mix relay.

Saminu Abdul Rasheed upon return from the International Invitational Relays in Nigeria will team up with 2020 Olympian, 2022 Diamond League 100m Winner and UG Alumnus, Benjamin Azamati, 2020 Olympians Joseph Paul Amoah and Sean Safo Antwi and Barnabas Agerh as members of Ghana’s 4x100m Relay Team for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.

Saminu Abdul Rasheed made his personal best in the 100m finals with a time of 10.31 seconds at the10th FASU Games placing second. He won gold in the 4x100m and silver in 100m at the just ended 2022 FASU Games in Nairobi, Kenya. That was his first experience of any international athletics championship.

Saminu Abdul Rasheed who will be participating in his third international athletics championship within two months as part of Ghana’s Relay Team expressed excitement on their call ups to the National Athletics Team.

“We are grateful to God for the selection to represent our country at the International Relay and Commonwealth Games in Nigeria and England respectively. We are still work in progress and with dedication, discipline and focus, we will get the desired results. We are happy with the call-ups and we will put up our very best during these competitions. Special appreciation to our coaches, teammates, the University of Ghana Sports Directorate and Ghana Athletics Association for pushing us throughout the season and all individuals who have supported this journey. We will say we did it together.”
