The Ghanaian, who returned from the Africa Cup of Nations on Thursday to play the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final for Arsenal, was given his marching orders after receiving two yellow cards in the closing three minutes of the game. Thomas Partey apologises for his red card and exit from the AFCON.

Partey had only just arrived in London this afternoon after Ghana’s early withdrawal from the AFCON, but he was desperate to help his team reach Wembley, where Chelsea awaited the victors of yesterday night’s match.

After starting the game on the bench, Partey came off the bench in the second half, but his dedication to the cause backfired when he was sent off for a late lunge on Fabinho.

The Arsenal midfielder has already apologized to fans on Instagram, explaining the reasoning behind his surprise appearance at the Emirates Stadium.

He wrote: “Am responsible for anything that happened and will take all the critiques, I should get more intelligent not to get in a challenge already booked but this is my personality, I like to fight for every ball.

“I love this club and love my country even though things don’t happen how I wanted, I would continue to work harder and make things right.

“I came back with the mentality to make myself available for the team to get to the final but it did not happen as planned.

“I will continue to give my all when am on the field of play because this is my life and this is what I chose to do.

“Am not happy with all that happened yesterday at the AFCON but I understand only with hard work things will continue to work hard to change this. Thanks.”

With Granit Xhaka suspended, Mohamed Elneny still at the AFCON, and Ainsley Maitland-Niles on loan at Roma, Arsenal’s midfield is already thin.

That is why Arteta and Arsenal fans can be forgiven for their displeasure with Partey’s red card.

It was the Gunners’ 14th goal since Arteta was appointed in December of last year.

No team has had more since then. Southampton comes in second with eight.
