The Ghana Athletics Association (GAA) is the body responsible for promoting and maintaining all the Athletics activities (Running, Throwing, Jumping and Walking) in the country. The Athletics’ clubs factor in promoting Ghana Athletics is a major tool for our athletics to move forward.

During the just ended Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Awards Ghana Athletics was part of the best 5 Federations that performed extremely well in 2021 season.

GAA sent athletes to World Athletics Relays Championships in Silesia, Poland and Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games of which some of the power house countries were not able to do. The 4x100m men relay team made history at Tokyo 2020 as being the only African Country to qualify for the final. They also broke the men’s 4x100m relay record.
Deborah Acquah broke the long jump record.
Benjamin Azamati broke the 100m record.
Joseph Paul Amoah broke the 200m record.
Ansah Sarfo runs the fastest 100m dash in Ghana
Lariba Sakat won CAA Region II Half Marathon
William Amponsah won CAA Region II Half Marathon

But it seems most of the Athletics Clubs in Ghana are always hampering and hovering the work of the association in all times.
No one is against the criticism of the association and I, myself can’t forego my name but with all we need to also bring ideas and work together for the betterment of the association. No matter what happens there has to be checks and balances in every institution to put the leaders on their toes.

Our sources and researches have indicated that most of the Athletics Clubs in Ghana don’t necessarily perform their quota to be added to the national grid to lift the good image and things the association is performing now. Our expect compiled all the athletics clubs in Ghana and we have about 28 running clubs now on our list that we can confirm that is vibrant in the system. But we know there are more and we will keep on getting the data for all the clubs in Ghana.

GAA was able to organise a lot of meets in 2020 and 2021 even at the peak of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic where most of the international races where cancelled.
GAA also secured a 3year partnership deal with one of the local brewery companies “Django Brothers Tema Craft Brewery”.

In 2021, GAA also organised a multiple coaching courses for beginners and advanced coaches in Ghana. Just recently they organised a World Athletics Level I Course in Ghana for our beloved coaches and about 24 coaches passed out successfully.

The work that the Athletics Clubs in Ghana has to do its to support the work of the association to move forward.
The social media factor is also a power house that when used wisely we can bring a lot attention to our sports ‘Athletics’ in Ghana.
We need to come together and make Ghana Athletics great again.
