Spurs defeat Watford a late goal by Sanchez
Tottenham won 1-0 against Watford thanks to a last-gasp winner from Davinson Sanchez, extending Antonio Conte’s unbeaten start to the weekend. Spurs defeat Watford a late goal by Sanchez.
At Vicarage Road, Sanchez shattered Watford’s tenacious resistance late into stoppage time.
Tottenham won their fifth Premier League match in a row thanks to the Colombian defender’s header.
Conte is still unbeaten in the league after eight games, as the Italian tries to rebuild a club that was in disarray when he was appointed to replace Nuno Espirito Santo, who was fired.
With two games remaining, Tottenham moves up to the fifth position, just two points behind fourth-placed Arsenal in north London.
Watford is the only team in the Premier League that has failed to keep a clean sheet this season, and they have gone 28 games without one.
After a sixth consecutive defeat, Claudio Ranieri’s squad is just two points above the relegation zone.
Watford has refused to release Emmanuel Dennis for the Africa Cup of Nations in order to strengthen their survival chances.
Dennis was excused, according to the Nigeria Football Federation, since Watford were “baring fangs.”
Dennis, who has eight goals this season, didn’t waste any time in demonstrating why Watford wanted to keep him.
He slid in Juraj Kucka, who twisted to make space for a shot straight at Hugo Lloris, and he generated an early chance.
After Watford’s Craig Cathcart failed to clear Lucas Moura’s cross, Tottenham’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg shot over for the first time.
Harry Kane had five goals in his previous five outings on New Year’s Day, and the Tottenham striker was on the lookout for a sixth with a powerful drive that Daniel Bachmann was unable to save.
Sergio Reguilon was set up for a fierce strike from the edge of the area by Hojbjerg, but Bachmann was up to the task.
After half an hour, Kane should have opened the scoring, capitalizing on Imran Louza’s error to blast just wide.
Soon after the break, he came close to scoring, turning his marker on the edge of the box for a rising attempt that Bachmann pushed over.
Watford had been concentrating on keeping Conte’s side at bay, but they finally broke through when Josh King’s strike forced a brilliant save from Lloris.
Bachmann’s save from Son Heung-strike min’s from Moura’s pass was all that stood between Tottenham and three points.
Watford thought they had gained a penalty after Joao Pedro’s raid was halted by Lloris’ challenge, but the VAR decision went in Tottenham’s favor, much to the Hornets’ chagrin.
In the closing stages, there was a five-minute delay as medics hurried to deal with a spectator who had allegedly gotten unwell in the Graham Taylor stand.
Tottenham won it well into the time added on for that delay, and it proved to be a key moment.
Son got a free kick on the left flank, and his cross was perfectly placed for Sanchez to nod home from close range.
