The Northern Regional Sports Authority has successfully organised its first-ever regional cross country championship. Report: Northern Regional Cross Country Championship 2022.

Most of the regions have already started their preparations ahead of the upcoming National Cross Country Championship that is scheduled to take place on Saturday 19th February at Akim Oda in the Eastern Region.

The Northern Regional Sports Authority has joined the other regions like Oti, Bono, and the host Eastern with a successful, smooth and transparent selection of the athletes to represent their regions in the forthcoming cross country championship.

The starting point was at the Alhaji Ali Mahama Sports Stadium and passed through the principal streets of Tamale Municipality and back to finish at the same Alhaji Ali Mahama Sports Stadium. There were about 30 athletes in all of which were 7 girls and 23 boys.

Men distance – 10.5km

Women distance – 9.5km

The theme for the event was “Running Towards 2023 African Games”.

According to the acting head coach of the Northern Region, Coach Sombila the turnout was great and athletes came from most of the municipal and districts to compete in the event. Athletes from the University of Development Studies, Tamale (UDS), Sora Athletics Clubs, various senior high schools, and other institutions were all at the starting point.

“Preparations towards the event was not all that enough but it was very successful. This is the first time we are organising an event in the Northern Region and we have learnt a lot from it. We know the race won’t easy be we will prepare very well to win it for the first time. We are going to camp all the selected athletes and prepare them very well ahead of the National Cross Country in February”, said Acting Headcoch Sombila.

Our reports also indicate that the race was delayed for almost an hour because the Police Escorts were waiting for a confirmation from the organisers to set in. Meanwhile, the organisers have already informed the Police Escorts a day before the event. Instead of the starting time of 6:30 am it was shifted to 7:30 am due to the delay.

“I will discuss the upcoming Ghana Armed Forces Cross Country Championship with my director and if possible our selected team will come and participate in that event”, he added.

Some of the dignitaries present were Northern Regional Minister Honourable Alhaji Shani Alhassan Saibu, National Sports Authority Northern Regional Director Hajia Salamatu Alhassan.
