The Indomitable Lions come from behind to win the tournament opener thanks to a penalty double from Aboubakar.
Cameroon began their quest for a sixth Africa Cup of Nations championship with a 2-1 victory over Burkina Faso at Yaounde’s Stade Omnisport Paul Biya.
The Stallions seized the lead in the 24th minute through a Gustavo Sangare goal, despite playing the Group A match at home in front of a loud crowd. In the 40th and 45th minutes, though, the Indomitable Lions struck back with two penalties converted by Vincent Aboubakar.
With less than a minute on the clock, Algerian referee Mustapha Ghorbal issued the first booking of the tournament to Burkina Faso defender Steeve Yago for a rough tackle on Moumi Ngamaleu.
In the eighth minute, the Indomitable Lions had an opportunity to take the lead when Vincent Aboubakar had a shot from the right side that he missed with his left foot.
Burkina Faso’s Patrick Malo was the second player to receive a yellow card for a reckless challenge in the 32nd minute, and Cameroon had an opportunity to equalize from another corner two minutes later, but Ngamaleu’s header flew wide.
Cameroon was awarded another penalty in added time at the end of the half after Dayo committed a harsh slide tackle, and this time referee Ghorbal pointed to the spot without hesitation.
The team’s captain took responsibility once again, sending the next kick past Koffi for a 2-1 half-time lead.
Burkina Faso rested the hard-working Traore in favor of Hassane Bande when Aboubakar was substituted, but the Indomitable Lions held on for their first victory of the tournament on home turf.
