Cabo Verde defeats Ethiopia 1-0, giving the Blue Sharks their first Afcon victory since 2013. Before the break, the Blue Sharks took advantage of their numerical advantage when Al Faisaly forward Julio Tavares scored a stoppage-time header to help Cape Verde overcome Ethiopia in the second Group A match of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. At the Olembe Stadium, the second encounter in Cameroon got off to a dramatic start, with both teams making their first appearance on the Afcon stage since 2013.

The Walias made an immediate switch after the ejection, with Messoud Mohammed replacing Mignot Debebe three minutes later.

Cape Verde maintained their possession after the break, with multiple attempts from Nuno Borges, Tavares, and Kenny Rocha Santos, but Ethiopia was not clinical enough, with only one chance on goal in the full 90 minutes.

Later in the game, Ethiopian coach Abate made five tactical changes, but they were unable to halt their 16-game winless streak in the competition.

Cape Verde now sits in second place in Group A, three points behind Cameroon, who defeated Burkina Faso 2-1 earlier in the day at the Olembe Stadium.

“What a remarkable win for the Blue Sharks. They’ve just sealed their very first #TotalEnergiesAFCONvictory since 2013″, CAF_Online wrote on their official Twitter handle.
