The 2022 National Cross Country Championship is scheduled to take place tomorrow, on Saturday, 26th February at Akim Oda in the Eastern Region.

The theme for this years’ event is dubbed “Running Towards the 13th African Games, Accra 2023” under the auspices of the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

The men category has a very strong field in the 4th edition in the events’ history.

The defending champion of the last edition at Sefwi Wiaso Basit Afful will be in action again and will be in for Central Region.

One of the prospects in tomorrows’ competition is Atia Koogo. He has not been defeated in his last 4 races. He won the 2021 Koforidua Marathon in a course record time and also dominated at the maiden edition of the Ghana Armed Forces Cross Country Championship. He will be in action for North East Region. Koogo said, “I have prepared to run a better time by God’s grace tomorrow. God shall lead us all through successfully. The weather here is very cool”.

Another pre-race favourite is University of Ghana’s athlete Aziz Mohammed. He won the 2020 National Cross Country Championship in Adjumako. He is also an ECOWAS Youth Games Medallist on the track. Aziz competed at the Ghana Armed Forces Cross Country Championship, unfortunately, dropped out. He will be competing for Central Region. Aziz said ” ā€œI have a higher target in this Cross Country because the University is expecting much from me. Secondly, this cross country will be used to select athletes to represent Ghana in the 2023 African Games and the World Cross country, so I want to win and represent Ghana at the international level.ā€.

Adisadel College’s sensational athlete David Nakousi will be at the starting line. He is tipped to be part of the top 3 finishers in the male category. He will be in action for Upper West Region.

Other athletes to watch Collins Mensah and Emmanuel Tetteh of Greater Accra, Richar Kweitu of Central Region amongst others. Preview: Basit, Atia, Nakousi, Aziz, and others prepare for fierce battle at Akim Oda.

Some dignitaries expected to grace the event are Vice President of Ghana His Excellency Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Minister of Youth and Sports Hon Ussif Mustapha, Director-General of National Sports Authority Prof Peter Twumasi, Eastern Regional Minister Hon Seth Acheampong among others.
