Marc Overmars, the director of football affairs at Ajax Amsterdam, has resigned with immediate effect following a series of inappropriate messages sent to multiple female coworkers, the Dutch club announced late Sunday.

In a statement, Overmars, 48, said he was ashamed of his actions and that they were “unacceptable.”

“Last week I was confronted with reports about my behaviour. And how this has come across to others. Unfortunately, I didn’t realise that I was crossing the line with this, but that was made clear to me in recent days,” Overmars said.

“I apologise. Certainly for someone in my position, this behaviour is unacceptable. I now see that too. But it is too late. I see no other option but to leave Ajax.”

Overmars, a former winger for the Netherlands, Arsenal, and Barcelona, was the director of Ajax from 2012 to 2017. He was just re-appointed to a fresh term that would last through the middle of 2026.

Overmars is widely regarded as the architect of Ajax’ current streak of victories, having greatly increased the club’s pay and recruited Premier League stars such as Daley Blind, Dusan Tadic, and Sebastien Haller.

Overmars’ decision comes amidst a public debate in the Netherlands about the treatment of women in the workplace. Weeks of allegations of harassment and abuse of power on the set of the hit talent show “The Voice” prompted an outpouring of disgust.

Ajax Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Edwin van der Sar said that the situation was appalling and unfortunate.

“A safe sport and working climate is very important. We will pay even more attention to this in the near future,” he added.
