PRESS RELEASE FOR ALL MEDIA HOUSE
Ghana Athletics Association (GAA) is the World Athletics (formerly IAAF) approved governing body for the sport of athletics (including cross-country and road running) with the mandate to develop and supervise athletics events in the country. In line with the World Athletics rule 2 (authorization to stage competitions) and Rule 23.1.b (participation in non-authorized competition). Ghana Athletics is required to ensure that the appropriate competition authorization, applicable international standards and individual eligibility requirements are upheld at all events held in the country. Notice: GHANA ATHLETICS ASSOCIATION PRESS RELEASE FOR ALL MEDIA HOUSE
Ghana Athletics request that, henceforth, all organisers of any competition that can be deemed “athletics” (including cross country, road races, marathons, etc) should officially apply to GAA by January 15th of each for their event to be sanctioned; in this first year (2021), ogarnisers will be given until April 30th to do so. Permits for competition will be granted upon receiving sanctioning from GAA. This directive is to enable the governing body streamline athletics in the country, protect athlete welfare and coordinate the athletics calendar to include all recognized competitions.
Without these permits, competitions (events) and the results therefrom will not be recognized by the National Federation (GAA) or by World Athletics (formerly IAAF). Organizing competitions that are not sanctioned by GAA also puts athletes at risk. Per World Athletics Rule 23.1.b, athletes may be declared ineligible for participating in unsanctioned events. Participation in unauthorized competitions would render athletes’ ineligible and invalidate performance(s). Athletes who participate in unauthorized competitions may be excluded from participation on duly authorized competition and may be ineligible for selection into national teams.
It should be noted that only results from sanctioned competitions will qualify athletes for national selection and will be forwarded to World Athletics. The GAA notes some individuals have already applied for the meet permits and we commend efforts being made by individual organizers over the years to develop the sport at grassroots level.
So far this year the GAA has approved and granted permission for the following races to take place in 2021
- Ghana fastest Human (GFH) Approved and permission granted for 2021 season
- Kwahu Wicked Marathon Approved and permission granted for 2021 season
- Takoradi Marathon Approved and permission granted for 2021 season
Thank you.
Signed
