N Kolay Istanbul Half Marathon elite field now includes Daniel Mateiko (58:26 HM PB)

The N Kolay Istanbul Half Marathon, which takes place on March 27th, has Daniel Mateiko at the top of the start list. The Kenyan is among the top ten fastest half marathon runners of all time, with a personal best of 58:26. Despite the Corona Pandemic, the Turkish half marathon, as well as its sibling event, the N Kolay Istanbul Marathon, which takes place in November, took place in 2020 and 2021. Spor Istanbul organisers are now preparing to conduct another high-quality competition under rigorous cleanliness guidelines, with an expected turnout of 8,000 half marathon runners.

The key contenders for the men’s race of the N Kolay Istanbul Half Marathon were announced today by the event organizers. Four of the runners on the start list have personal bests that are quicker than Kenya’s Kibiwott Kandie’s current course record of 59:35 set last spring. Since three of them set personal records last year, they are in a strong position to achieve even greater success in Istanbul.

Daniel Mateiko, 24, made a significant breakthrough in 2021. He first broke the one-hour barrier in Copenhagen with a time of 59:25, then improved to 58:26 when he finished third in Valencia. Rodgers Kwemoi, a fellow Kenyan, is now the second-fastest athlete, with a personal best of 59:16.

Ethiopians Solomon Berihu and Huseyidin Esa will travel to Istanbul with personal records of 59:17 and 59:32 respectively. While Berihu clocked his PB when he was runner-up in New Delhi in 2019 Esa only emerged on the international road running circuit in autumn last year. The 21-year-old made an instant impact with a second place in Lisbon in 59:39 and then improved four weeks later at his second international race, winning in Poznan (Poland) with his current PB.

Aras Kaya of Turkey will be hoping to improve on his recent performance at the N Kolay Istanbul Half Marathon. Last spring, the former Kenyan finished 12th in Istanbul with a time of 63:36, the same time he had finished two years earlier in this event. In the interim, Aras Kaya set a personal best of 60:51 in the World Championships in Gdynia, Poland, where he finished 24th. Kaya has been competing for Turkey since 2016, winning two European Cross Country Championships and finishing second just two months ago in the continental championships.
