Maaron – Peace Building with Education and Sports
Maaron – Peace Building with Education and Sports – The Maaron Initiative – A Peace Building with Education and Sports is a project by Wisdom Boinde – a sports lover, educationist, and philanthropist.
“The word ‘Maaron’ means ‘peace’ in Dagaare, the language spoken in Northern Ghana. The Maaron initiative is a peace building project aiming to address the socioeconomic conflict between Northern and Southern Ghana. To do so, I am partnering with High Morale Sports Academy (HMSA), a nationally recognized sports academy in Northern Ghana. HMSA trains young Northern women to compete in national and international track-and-field, cross-country and marathon races”, Boinde said.
According to him the Maaron project will help the youth, especially young women to use their athletic affiliation to secure sports quota scholarships at higher educational institutions in Ghana and abroad. This will also open up economic opportunities for Northern Ghanaian women and reduce the number of women who are forced to migrate South to become “kayayei” (female laborers).
According to statistical data about 5000’s young and energetic women migrate from the North to the South and Coast areas each year for greener pasture.
“We want to curb the number of young women and men that drop out of school each year. This is just the initial stage and for the subsequent years, we will make it a track and field event which will cover all the sprinters and field athletes”, Coach Boinde Boniface disclosed.
“Any individual, NGO, and corporate bodies who want to partner and sponsor this project are all welcome”, he added.
“This project will address educational inequality, in both gender and regional dimensions combats systematic exclusion. Enabling young women who migrate South to become “kayayeis” due to educational exclusion, to get access to education promotes peace at the communal and national levels”, Wisdom Boinde concluded.
