Letesenbet Gidey Smashes The Women’s World Half Marathon Record

Ethiopia’s Letesenbet Gidey has smashed the women’s half marathon record at Valencia Half Marathon. Letesenbet crossed the finish line in 1:02.52 to set a new World Half Marathon Record in the women’s category. The previous record was set by Kenyan’s Ruth Chepngetich in Istanbul, Turkey in 1:04.02. Letesenbet Gidey is an Ethiopian long-distance runner, born on 20th March 1998 in a place called Endameskel in the Tigray Region. She is the last child of her parents, with two brothers and a sister. She grew up on the family farm. She was dropped from school at the age of 13 years because she refused to join the school athletics team. But she was later back in school when she accepted to join the team.

She took part in the just ended Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in Japan as she went home with a bronze medal in the women’s 10,000 meters. In 2019, she won silver in the world athletics in Doha been runner up to Sifan Hassan in the month of September. She has some undisputed world records of which that makes her among the greatest female African athletes.

On 17th November 2019, she set a new record of time 44:20 in a 15km run at the Zevenheuvelenloop road race in the Netherlands, breaking the previous world record held by Jocelyne Jepkosgei in 2017, becoming the first woman to run under 45 minutes. In addition, Letesenbet has been competing in several cross countries both in and out of her country of which she never disappoints her fans.
