Kipchoge, Allyson and Thompson-Herah, Laureus shortlisted for World Sports Awards

In this year’s Laureus Awards, Olympic winners Elaine Thompson-Herah, Allyson Felix, and Eliud Kipchoge have been nominated for Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year.
Despite the continuous interruption caused by the Covid-19 outbreak, the resumption of big events, like as the Olympic Games in Tokyo, created unparalleled drama in the sporting world, which is reflected in the nominees’ lists.
Thompson-Herah, who was awarded World Female Athlete of the Year last year, is up for the Laureus Sportswoman of the Year award after capturing three gold medals at the Tokyo Olympics in the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m relay.
Eliane Thompson-Herah wrote
“Thank you
for your nomination for the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year Award. I am honored and excited to be one of the nominee and congratulations to all the other nominees. #Laureus22″

Felix, on the other hand, is nominated for her record-breaking medal haul, which includes bronze in the 400m and gold in the 4x400m relay. Swimmers Emma McKeon and Katie Ledecky, tennis player Ashleigh Barty, and football star Alexia Putellas are among the nominees.
“She is an athlete who just completely dominated their sport last year,” athletics legend and Laureus Academy Member Michael Johnson said of Thompson-Herah. “100m, 200m, repeating as champion, which is very difficult to do, and threatening one of the oldest and most impressive world records in the books, the women’s 100m – we haven’t talked about anyone threatening that record for years.”
“I believe with my whole heart in the power of sport to transform lives and to give youth around the world a sense of hope and empowerment and purpose”, said Allyson Felix
Kenyan marathon superstar Kipchoge is one of six men’s award nominees, with Tom Brady of the New England Patriots, Robert Lewandowski of Bayern Munich, Max Verstappen of Formula One, Novak Djokovic of tennis, and Caleb Dressel of swimming.
“I can say it’s an honour to be nominated as Sports Personality of the Year Award 2021. Fantastic to be in the same list as great sportsmen like Tom Brady, Novak Djokovic, Caeleb Dressel, Robert Lewandowski & Max Verstappen. Thank you to all for your great support!”, Eliud wrote on his Twitter page.

“I think we have to conclude that Eliud Kipchoge is now the greatest marathon runner of all time,” said World Athletics President and Laureus Academy Member Sebastian Coe. “I had the great privilege of watching him win his Olympic title in Sapporo. He was so in command of that race that day. His contribution to athletics is Muhammad Ali-esque.”
Yulimar Rojas, the Olympic triple jump champion, and Neeraj Chopra, the Olympic javelin winner, have both been nominated for the Breakthrough award.
Following a vote by the Laureus World Sports Academy, which includes 71 sporting legends, the winners will be announced in April.
