Ishmael Ashitey, a former Greater Accra Regional Minister, has died. After a brief illness, the former Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party, NPP, died at the Tema General Hospital today, Friday, January 7, 2022. Ishmael Ashitey, former Greater Accra Regional Minister passes on.

Mr. Ashitey, 68, returned from the United States a week ago after seeking medical care for an unexplained illness, according to party sources who confirmed to Citi News.

Mr. Ashitey was rumored to be considering running for the NPP’s National Chairmanship when the party’s National Officers are elected later this year.

Mr. Ashitey was born in Tema, Greater Region, on November 20th, 1954. He attended Manhean Middle Mixed School in Tema for his basic and secondary studies.

He moved to Kpando Technical Institute in the Volta Region after successfully finishing his studies for the middle school leaving certificate, and then to the Accra Polytechnic for a mechanical engineering course.

In order to further his education, he enrolled at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, where he earned a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.

He graduated from GIMPA with an Executive Master’s in Governance and Leadership.

As a Mechanical Engineer, Hon. Ishmael Ashitey has worked for a variety of organizations both inside and outside the country.

Tema Steel Works, Accra Brewery Limited, Tecnofin Nederlands, and General Establishment for Plastics & Industries are all in Ghana, while Tecnofin Nederlands and General Establishment for Plastics & Industries are both in Libya.

Hon. Ashitey has climbed through the ranks of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) since entering the party in 1992, thanks to his hard work, passion, and dedication.

From 1996 to 2008, he was a Member of Parliament representing Tema East on three separate occasions.

He worked on the Mines and Energy, Foreign Affairs, Government Assurances, and House committees, among others, during his time in Parliament.

Under the leadership and government of H.E John Agyekum Kuffour, Hon. Ashitey served as a Minister of State in the Ministries of Food and Agriculture, Trade, Industry, and President’s Special Initiatives.

During the 2016 elections, Hon. Ashitey, as NPP Regional Chairman, led his party to retain and reclaim the majority of Parliamentary seats in Greater Accra, assisting the party in achieving victory.

He was a member of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the NPP and a member of the NPP National Council till his death.

As a Presbyterian, Hon. Ishmael Ashitey enjoys reading, swimming, strolling, and listening to music.

Married with four (4) children.
