Hellen Obiri to headline San Silvestre Vallecana race
Hellen Obiri, a two-time Olympic 5,000m silver medalist, will kick off her new season at the 57th edition of the San Silvestre Vallecana on New Year’s Eve, Friday, 31st December 2021 in Madrid, Spain. Hellen Obiri to headline San Silvestre Vallecana race.
The San Silvestre Vallecana Internacional returns with force after saving the 2020 edition in a reduced format and only for the elite and sub-elite and will have 1,500 runners on the streets of Madrid in the late afternoon of December 31st, 2021.
Obiri’s Pace Management announced on their Facebook page that the two-time world 5,000m champion will compete in the race where she began her road running career in 2018.

“On December 31, world 5000m champion Hellen Obiri will compete in Madrid’s San Silvestre Vallecana. Hellen raced the fastest road 10k of her career there in 2018, clocking in at 29:59,” according to Pace Management.
Ethiopians Degitu Azimeraw (2:17:58 in a marathon this year), Haven Hailu (2:20:19), and Israeli Lornah Salpeter, the European champion of 10,000 meters with the best time of 30:05, will compete against the Kenyan.
Obiri finished second in Madrid in 2018 after a dramatic battle with Brigid Kosgei, a fellow Kenyan who holds the current world marathon record.

Obiri, the defending global cross country champion, will compete against Degitu Azimeraw of Ethiopia, who is ten years her junior in real life.
