Elaine Thompson-Herah, a five-time Olympic sprint winner, began her 2020 campaign with a strong showing in the 60m race at the Queens/Grace Jackson Invitational in Kingston on Saturday, January 29.

In the 60m dash, Jamaica’s three-time gold medallist from the Tokyo Olympics (100m, 200m, and 4x100m) ran 7.19 seconds against a -1.9 m/s headwind.

“It feels great, new season, kicking it off with the 60m,” Thompson-Herah said.

The 29-year-old ran the second-fastest 100m in history at the Prefontaine Classic, clocking 10.54 seconds although she missed the current World record set by Florence Griffith-Joyner in 1988 by 0.05 seconds.

Thompson-Herah has yet to determine whether or not she will compete in the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Belgrade in March. She only raced in World Indoors once, in Eugene in 2016, where she won bronze in the 60m dash.

Herah is planning to break the 100m woemen’s record and she said its possible after running 10.54 seconds at Prefontaine Classic in the United States of America in 2021.
