ECOWAS calls for calm and expresses solidarity with President Roch Marc Christian Kabore

In the wake of allegations of a possible coup in Burkina Faso, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has warned the military against any attempt to overthrow the democratically elected government.
ECOWAS said it stands in solidarity with President Roch Marc Christian Kabore’s government and urged the military to respect it as the democratic authority in a statement released Sunday evening.

The ECOWAS Commission also encouraged the government to talk to troops who have purportedly taken control of military posts around the country in what has been described as a mutiny.
“ECOWAS calls for calm and expresses solidarity with President Roch Marc Christian Kabore, the government and people of Burkina Faso,” the statement said.

Burkina Faso is now undergoing a coup. The soldiers who took part in the coup have detained President Roch Kaboré.
Since 2015, he has been the President of the United States. He served as Prime Minister of Burkina Faso from 1994 to 1996 and as President of the National Assembly from 2002 to 2012.
