Brigadier-General Constance Emefa Edjeani-Afenu, the first female general in the Ghana Army, has died.

She was believed to have died on Monday at the 37 Military Hospital following a brief illness.

On March 7, 2016, Constance Emefa Edjeani-Afenu was promoted to Brigadier-General, the highest post ever held by a female in the Armed Forces.

General Constance Emefa Edjeani-Afenu was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant into the Ghana Armed Forces on April 25, 1980.

After completing her 18 months of regular training at the Ghana Military Academy, she served as a Platoon Commander at the 2nd Battalion of Infantry in 1980 for her regimental training.

From 1981 to 1982, she served as Platoon Commander and Adjutant with the 3rd Border Guards Battalion.

She worked as a General Staff Officer Grade 3 (Training and Personnel Staff Officer) at the Border Guards Headquarters between 1983 and 1984, and as an Adjutant at the Border Guards Training School in Kpetoe in 1984.

She was named Second in Command of the Ghana Armed Forces Pay Regiment in 1995, and Commanding Officer in 1999.

In all these positions, she was the first female in the Armed Forces to occupy them.

In 2013 she became the first woman to be appointed Deputy Military Adviser (DMILAD) at the Permanent Mission of Ghana to the UN, New York, till 2016.

While serving as DMILAD, she was elevated to Brigadier-General in March 2016, becoming the first female to be appointed to the rank of General in the Ghana Armed Forces.

She also represented the Ghana Armed Forces to the Controller and Accountant General’s Department.

Brigadier General Edjeani-Afenu also served as the GhanBat (Ghana Battalion) in UNIFIL (1994 & 1998), MONUSCO (2007), and UNMIL (United Nations Mission in Lebanon) (2009).
