In the midst of a salary dispute, Barcelona’s Gerard Pique publishes a screenshot of a bank transfer. Barcelona had a difficult year in 2021.

The summer was a terrifying moment for both fans and players as the club lurched from one problem to the next.

The ruckus reached a head when Barcelona’s superstar Lionel Messi was forced to leave the club, with La Liga refusing to register him until the team’s financial misbehavior was resolved.

As his managerial rule devolved into a dictatorship of shoulder shrugs and tense press conferences, former manager Ronald Koeman appeared to have entirely lost interest.

As the league’s ever-presents slid down the standings, results on the field suffered.

Gerard Pique was one of the players who came under scrutiny at first, but the defender quickly revealed that his salary had been nearly halved in comparison to his previous contract.

He wrote in Spanish “Personatges com aquest cobrant d’una televisió pública per defensar els seus amics. Aquí tens el 50% de la meva nòmina cobrada a 30 de desembre. Respecta’t una mica.”

English translated “Characters like this charging for public television to defend their friends. Here is 50% of my payroll earned on December 30th. Respect yourself a little.”
