Athletics Competitions In Ghana 2021

We are looking at athletics competitions that will be held in August to September in Ghana, West Africa. These events are mostly road running and they vary in distances. Usually, it starts from 5km, 10km, 21km (half marathon), and 42km (marathon). These events are mostly organised by individuals across the country.

Although most of the competitions have been postponed and some are also canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic (covid-19). The covid-19 has rendered most of our sporting activities to become inactive.

Ghana as a country has already banned athletics in our various schools. The decision came from the president as part of the measures to control the spread of the coronavirus in the country. Although most of the sports coaches and fans are against this ban on school sporting activities and they demand an immediate lift of the ban.

In Ghana, every year there is an average road competition of 10 which excludes the track events. These average races are the ones that are approved by the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA). But there are a lot of other competitions there are being held without being certified by GAA.

In all the certified competitions, their times are being recognised by the World Athletics, formally the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). The World Athletics is the head of all athletics associations or federations in every country. They also spearheaded all athletics activities in the world.

Athletics Competitions In Ghana 2021.

Millennium Half Marathon

The Millennium Half Marathon is an annual event that is held in Ghana. This event is one of the biggest sporting events in the country. It is held in the capital city, Accra. In the year 2020, it was postponed to late August but it was later canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. The race organisers want to try their possible best to organise it this year. The date was announced via their official Instagram account about 3 months ago. But it seems it’s left with barely less than 25 days to the start but no news from the race organisers. We are in doubt that the race will come on this year.

Date: 4th September 2021

Place: Accra, Greater Accra

Distance: 5000m (5km) and Half Marathon (21km)

Verdict: The date is not yet confirmed and it is still unclear that whether it will come on or not.


Tamale Half Marathon

The maiden edition of the Tamale Half Marathon is slated for the 25th of September, 2021. This competition will become the first-ever major competitive road race in the Northern Sector of Ghana. It is a 21k full race. According to the organisers registration will be opened in early September for all interested athletes to participate. Although the start of the competition is already announced. They announced it about three weeks ago. The event will be held on the principal streets of Tamale.

Date: 25th September 2021

Place: Tamale, Northern Region

Distance: Half Marathon (21km)

Verdict: It’s certainly the race will come on. The race organisers are doing everything possible to make it a success.

Registration: Not yet opened.


Asante Akyem Marathon

The Asante Akyem Marathon is a road race event that is organised in the Asante Akyem Township. The first 3 editions of this event were very successful. The fact about this competition is that upon all the previous editions the distance has been changing from year to year. The maiden edition was 11km stretch, the second edition was 42.2km that a marathon (the athlete’s views were that the distance was not up to 42.2km), and the last edition was also 42.2km. The fourth edition has been reduced to a 24km road race. Registration is ongoing and it’s free for all.

Place: Asante Akyem Agogo, Ashanti Region

Distance: 24km

Verdict: It will come on
