There has been a very heated argument on the topic, “Who holds Ghana’s half marathon record in the males’ category?
A lot of sports enthusiasts have been disturbed on this matter after recording 1:02:05 seconds during the 2022 Millennium Marathon.
Requirements to get a record certified by World Athletics
- The route must be certified by Ghana Athletics Association (GAA)
- The route must also be certified by World Athletics (WA)
- The timekeepers must be certified by World Athletics
- The race must have a World Athletics label
- The technical officials must be certified by both GAA and WA
Ishmael Arthur run 1:02:05 seconds in the Millennium Marathon in Accra, on Saturday, 3 September 2022, and most are in dire situations why it was not regarded as a new national half marathon record in Ghana.

Reason: His time is regarded as the fastest time to run by any Ghanaian athlete in the 21km course. The route was certified by the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA) but was not certified by the World Athletics (WA).
Ishmael run a Personal Best, Season Best, Millennium Marathon Course Record, and Fastest Ghanaian Athlete in 21km.
His time can be a national record if the Millennium Marathon meets all the above requirements.
William Amponsah, the current national record holder in the half marathon run a time of 1:05:38 in October 2019, Onitsa, Nigeria.

On Sunday, 11 September 2022, he run another 1:03:15 seconds in the Great North Run in the United Kingdom.
His time was recorded as a new Personal Best and Season Best but not a national record.
Reason: The Great North Run course, though certified, is not eligible for records.
Why: Because the route has an elevation of 30.5m and start/finish separation of more than 75%
Per the above explanations, the Ghana Half Marathon Record is still 1:05:38 seconds which was set by William Amponsah in 2019.
