Cameroon, the hosts, kicked off the 33rd Africa Cup of Nations with a win over Burkina Faso on Sunday evening.

At the new Olembe stadium in Yaounde, captain Vincent Aboubakar scored twice from the penalty spot to give the Indomitable Lions a 2-1 victory.


After a defensive blunder in the Cameroon area, Gustavo Sangare gave the Burkinabes the lead with a vicious shot after 24 minutes.

After a reckless challenge on André Anguissa by Burkinabe captain Bertrand Traore, Cameroon was awarded a penalty 12 minutes later.

The early red card had a lot of consequences on the Ethiopians National Team and Cabo Verde on the other hand took advantage of it. The first review of a VAR to be given a red card in the African Cup of Nations 2021.


Yared Bayeh from Walias of Ethiopia received the first ever red card at the AFCON 2021.

Ethiopia’s ten-man squad defeated 1-0 to Cabo Verde in the other match of the day. The Blue Sharks beat the Walias, who were reduced to ten men after Yared Bayeh’s early dismissal, thanks to a close-range header from Julio Tavares.
