Kwesi Nyantakyi, the former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has conveyed his best wishes to the Black Stars ahead of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon. AFCON 2021: Former GFA President, Kwasi Nyantakyi has urged Ghanaians to support the Black Stars.
After being suspended from football management in June 2018, the GFA’s longest-serving president made his first public appearance and statement, saying he hopes the Black Stars will make Ghana proud. He stated that the squad’s large number of inexperienced players will be beneficial to the team.
His remark, he explained, is based on what happened in the 2010 edition of the tournament, when Ghana fielded a few young players but still made it to the finals despite the fact that many doubted the team.
“I remember Issa Hayatou – then CAF President — called me and said, ‘Kwesi, your team is too young, inexperienced, AFCON is not for inexperienced players’ but we were able to sail through to the finals,” he told Captain Smart on the preview of the 2021 AFCON on Onua ‘Maakye’ Friday, January 7, 2021.
“If you say something and they get discouraged, they can’t…do you remember 2008 when Asamoah Gyan was young? People said a lot of things and he packed his luggage from the Fiesta Royale hotel and left. The President himself had to talk to him including some of us before he returned. So they need our support”.
Apart from Ghana, whom Mr. Nyantakyi wants to win the AFCON, he feels Mali, Senegal, Algeria, and Morocco have what it takes to win the trophy.
Fmr. FA Prez, Kwasi Nyantakyi made a return to TV this morning on @OnuaTV and he had quite a lot to talk about.
